West Baltimore Man Proposes Marriage at Party to Promote New Scratch-Off
Hundreds of happy partygoers looked on as Jermaine Houston knelt before his lifelong sweetheart to ask for her hand in marriage. With its cruise theme and tropical backdrop, the Maryland Lottery’s Cruise for Cash Bash was the ideal setting for celebrating. “I wanted a lot of people around,” said Jermaine. “I thought, the more the merrier.” So, when his girlfriend, Mary Whitfield suggested that they attend the Lottery’s party to celebrate the agency’s new Cruise for Cash scratch-off, a light bulb went off in his head and he began making plans.
Those plans included having Lottery master of ceremonies, Brian Johnson, call Jermaine to the stage on the premise of returning his lost driver’s license. Once in front of the crowd, Jermaine proceeded to take the microphone. “Although I haven’t won a cruise yet, I’ve won something even better,” said Jermaine. With that, Mary was called to come forward and the band began playing the classic love song “At Last”. Mary’s tearful reply was a resounding “yes” as Jermaine slipped the ring on her finger. The couple embraced and began slow dancing while the nearly 400 attendees cheered them on. Jermaine and Mary, who are both 31 years of age, met when they were teenagers and have been together ever since. They intend to marry on Valentine’s Day. When asked if there were any honeymoon plans, Mary said, “No plans yet. He might have to surprise me with a cruise.”
