$250,000 Mega Millions Ticket Retrieved from Trash

(Baltimore) – The winners of a Mega Millions $250,000 second-tier prize nearly threw away their ticket after checking it on a Lottery ticket scanner.  The couple, who are originally from Korea, bought the Quick Pick ticket Friday evening. The next day when the wife scanned the ticket and saw “Cash at Lottery”, she tossed it into the trash can. The husband, who had observed her discarding it, asked to see the ticket.

“I looked at it and thought right away that we’d won something big,” said the 48-year-old man.  He was familiar with winning, having won the $50,000 Bonus Match 5 prize ten years ago in 1998.

The happy twosome, who has been married for a year-and-a-half, immediately went home to celebrate. “We closed our business for the day,” said the man. “We went home and had champagne.”

The Prince George’s County man has a 19-year-old son who is a sophomore at the University of St. Paul in Minnesota and intends to use his winnings to help pay for his tuition. He is very enthusiastic about continuing to play the Lottery and looks forward to visiting the headquarters again to claim the big Mega Millions jackpot.  “I’ll be back,” he said, smiling.

The winning ticket was purchased at Champagne Liquors located at 5611 Landover Rd. in Hyattsville.
