Woman’s Stop for Gas Fuels $250,000 Mega Millions Win

(Baltimore) – A Germantown woman veered from her normal routine and stopped on Tuesday, September 23rd to get gas. “I never get gas on Tuesdays,” said the soft-spoken winner. “But that day, on the way home from work I did.” It was raining, so she ran into the store, where she bought two Mega Millions Quick Pick tickets for that evening’s drawing.

Two weeks later, again on her way home from work, the Montgomery
County woman needed to stop at the market to get some fruit and vegetables. But before getting her grocery purchases, she went to the adjacent Liquor store to once again buy a couple Mega Millions tickets. “I was buying the tickets and happened to think about the other ones,” said the 61-year-old-widow. “I scanned the first one and it said cash at Lottery.” Not understanding and thinking there was something wrong with her ticket, she scanned it two more times. She then asked the store clerk what it meant and was told that she’d won more than $600.

Still unaware of her windfall, she went to the store and upon returning home called her daughter, who went online to check the numbers. She knew she’d matched all five numbers except for the Mega Ball but again didn’t realize the size of her win. It wasn’t until the next morning when she talked to her other daughter that it became clear. “I was just so thankful,” said the healthcare worker. “This is a time when I really need it.”

The woman who is originally from Jamaica intends to pay bills, help her children, put away money for retirement and give to charity with her winnings.

The winning ticket was purchased at Germantown Sunoco, located at
19235 Frederick Rd. in Germantown.
