Temple Hills couple pleased with timing of Maryland Lottery windfall
They’ve been married for half a century, so it didn’t necessarily come as a surprise when a Temple Hills woman received a Pick 5 Maryland Lottery ticket from her husband with the instruction to check it because it might be a big winner.
“I checked it and said, ‘You’re right,’” the player said Nov. 25 when claiming her prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The prize: $50,000.
The wife acknowledged her husband might derive some benefit, despite her husband having given the ticket to her. He just winked.
The winner enjoys playing the Lottery, but a Pick 5 ticket isn’t usually in her repertoire.
“I’m a scratch-off person,” she said, with her husband adding, “I’m a numbers man.”
In their time playing, the two have had a few small wins, but nothing akin to the $50,000 win. They’ve already got a plan for the money. They recently had substantial repair work done on their home and the winnings will help pay down that debt.
“It’ll put a dent in it,” the wife said.
Meanwhile, the couple have 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and they’ll all end up having a good Christmas, but that was going to happen anyway.
Both plan to continue playing, and hoping to win.
“I hope we can come again soon,” the winner said of her trip to claim a big prize at Lottery headquarters.
The $50,000 winning ticket was purchased at Marlow Wings at 4147 Branch Avenue in Temple Hills, which receives a bonus of $500, equal to 1% of the prize total.
