$10 ticket purchased on Super Bowl Sunday leads to big win
A Lady Luck scratch-off delivered a very special gift to a Westminster man earlier this week, complete with a $250,000 top prize that he claimed on Valentine’s Day.
The publishing house employee left work on Super Bowl Sunday and encountered his Lottery luck at Wawa #590 in Westminster. The scratch-off fan said he prefers playing $10 games, and there were two options in the store’s self-serve Lottery vending machine. Faced with a choice between Lady Luck and the Blizzard Bucks scratch-offs, he wavered and then selected Lady Luck, having played the game before.
“I just wanted to play a $10 one,” the Carroll County resident said, adding that he took the ticket home and scratched it off there, using his lucky penny. First, he scratched off all of the winning numbers and then, starting at the bottom right corner, he revealed the numbers going up the right column until he matched a winning number on the top row. When he revealed the prize, he stared in disbelief at the $250,000 figure.
“I was in shock,” he said. Even worse, there was no one he could share the news with, saying, “It was too late. I couldn’t call anybody until the next morning.”
His dad, who accompanied him to claim the $250,000 prize, received a text message from his son when he awoke at 5:30 a.m. The text asked the dad to call. The lucky winner has only shared news of his Lottery luck with family members, he said.
His big win was still so new on Valentine’s Day when he claimed his prize that he was unsure of his plans for the windfall. “It hasn’t even sunk in yet,” he said. The lucky player added that he will initially put the funds in the bank and share some money with family members.
His father, who plays scratch-offs, Mega Millions and Powerball, knows what he plans to do. “Now, I’ve got to go play some scratch-offs,” he said, smiling.
Our winner’s lucky retailer also shares in the fun. For selling a $250,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, Wawa #590 located at 805 Leidy Road in Westminster will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery. Lady Luck launched in September of 2022, and this was the last of its five $250,000 top prizes to be claimed. The ticket still has two unclaimed $20,000 prizes and 11 unclaimed $10,000 prizes.
