Baltimore Lottery Enthusiast Wins $50,000 Playing Her Mom’s Numbers

Family tradition yields prize for home remodeling projects

She’s won before and after claiming a $50,000 Pick 5 prize this week, the Maryland Lottery player from Baltimore says she’s ready to win again.

“I’m a regular scratcher, (Racetrax) horser – all of it!” she said on June 6 at Maryland Lottery headquarters. The lucky lady claimed her prize with her brother at her side.

The two are dedicated Lottery players, having picked it up as a hobby from their mother. In fact, the combination that hit for $50,000 – 11655 – was one their mother used. The lucky player realized she had won in the June 4 evening drawing when her brother called to ask if she had played her usual numbers. It’s become a nighttime ritual for him to call and check on Lottery winnings.

Her brother, meanwhile, has also picked up Lottery prizes previously in the $500 to $2,500 range. His favorite games are Pick 3 and Pick 4.

“I didn’t graduate to Pick 5 yet,” he quipped.

The $50,000 win is a big one, but it isn’t the first big prize the winner has claimed. Going back to around 2009, she hit for $40,000 on a $3 scratch-off.

“You gave me some of that for Christmastime,” the brother recalled.

The winner has several plans for this windfall: remodeling her kitchen and bathrooms, plus socking a little into her savings account. As she left Lottery Winner’s Circle, the loyal player said she plans to be back.

Sharing in her good fortune is Hertsch’s Tavern at 1902 Gwynn Oak Avenue in Baltimore. The business received a $500 bonus from the Lottery, equal to 1% of the prize, for selling a $50,000-winning Pick 5 ticket.
