$50,000 Powerball Win Felt ‘Surreal’ to Carroll County Woman

Player plans to use prize to renovate her home

An anonymous Carroll County player is celebrating her decision to buy the $2 quick-pick ticket that won a $50,000 third-tier prize in the Jan. 25  Powerball drawing.

Going by the nickname “V” to tell the story of her good fortune, the longtime player said she has purchased tickets off and on for as long as she can remember. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she started playing more regularly and established a Friday routine of stopping by her local 7-Eleven, located at 120 South Main Street in Union Bridge, to purchase Powerball, Mega Millions and Multi-Match tickets. Over the years, she has won prizes under $5,000 and was always hoping for a bigger win.

“V’s” luck has changed! When she scanned her latest batch of tickets bought on Jan. 24, she saw an unexpected message — she won $50,000! Initially in disbelief, she had the $2 Powerball ticket scanned twice to confirm her third-tier win.

Describing herself as feeling “stunned,” “V” told Lottery officials, “This was a surreal moment you might only dream about.”

“V” has kept a low profile since her win, sharing the exciting news only with close family members. As for her plans for the prize, she intends to make long-awaited renovations to her kitchen and put any remaining funds toward other home improvements.

The Powerball jackpot has continued its roll in recent weeks, reaching an estimated jackpot annuity of $154 million for the Wednesday, Feb. 12 drawing. The estimated cash option is $71.4 million.
