Expanded Thanksgiving celebration is in the works
A pair of sisters from Aberdeen who scored a $50,000 win playing Bonus Match 5 picked up their winnings on Oct. 28, saying their Thanksgiving celebration will be bigger than usual this year.
“We will have a good Thanksgiving!” one sister said while they visited the Winner’s Circle at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. Mainly, though, the pair will keep the lucky win in the Oct. 20 drawing a secret. The day they claimed the prize, the women had no plans yet for enjoying the bulk of the money.
They do, however, plan to keep playing Lottery games.
“It’s just fun to play,” one sister said. They prefer Bonus Match 5 because they like the odds of winning better than those in the big jackpot games like Mega Millions and Powerball. The odds of winning the $50,000 Bonus Match 5 top prize on a single ticket are 1 in 575,757. Meanwhile, the odds for the top prizes in Mega Millions and Powerball are 1 in 302,575,350 and 1 in 292,201,338, respectively.
The two also like Bonus Match 5 because it is a Maryland in-state game, while Powerball and Mega Millions are multistate games.
They bought their winning ticket at Carsins Run Liquors at 3501 Churchville Road, just west of Aberdeen. The Harford County business receives a bonus of $500 from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning ticket.
