Montgomery County woman wins with Trifecta wager
She rarely buys Maryland Lottery games, a federal government employee told Lottery officials, and if the family hadn’t needed a bag of ice, the lucky Racetrax ticket would never have come her way. That’s how close the Clarksburg resident was to not purchasing the $5 ticket that turned into a $30,734 win.
Her journey to the big win begins with an icy errand.
“I needed some ice for the cooler so I stopped at the first store I saw,” said the wife and mother. That store was Classic Beer & Wine in Rockville. “I saw the Lottery machine there as the cashier was giving me my change, so I asked for a Racetrax ticket, a Trifecta with horses 10, 11 and 12. It’s my husband’s favorite game and favorite wager.”
Checking her tickets later, the 41-year-old thought she won $30,000 on one of the five races. The dubious player told herself, “That can’t be right.” Showing her ticket to her husband, she was shocked to hear the news that her initial thought was correct – she won $30,734! “Even though he was sure, I still didn’t really believe it. Still don’t.”
The win comes at a perfect time for her Montgomery County family. “We have been planning a significant home repair project. This win will help us get started sooner than we thought,” she said.
Her Montgomery County retailer gets to share in the fun, too. Classic Beer & Wine located at 891 Rockville Pike in Rockville earns a $307.34 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1% of the prize.
