Quick-pick ticket for husband yields $50,000 win
A 61-year-old retiree from Abingdon bought Lottery games for herself and for her husband last week and won a $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize. Lady luck found the loyal player at a local 7-Eleven where she purchases her weekly games.
“I have the same numbers that I play each time,” said the winner. “But, it was a quick-pick ticket that I bought for my husband that was the winner.”
The Powerball jackpot on Oct. 11 jumped to $1.765 Billion and was hit that night by a player in California. However, the lucky Marylander wasn’t necessarily chasing that jackpot. She typically plays the jackpot games, Bonus Match 5 and the Pick 3/4/5 games weekly. Her trip to 7-Eleven #33247 located at 3901 Pulaski Highway in Abingdon was routine. After purchasing her games and the one Powerball ticket for her husband, the lucky lady headed home. She checked the ticket for a win the next day.
“I checked the numbers and saw that I had some that matched,” she said. “I knew I had at least a $1,000 winning ticket.” But when she scanned the game using her mobile Lottery app, the congratulations message read $50,000!
The winner’s husband, who is also retired, was out walking the dog when she discovered the $50,000 prize. He was in for a shock when he came home.
“She said, ‘I have something to show you and showed me the winning message on her phone,” said the husband. “She’s lucky, so I thought it was a few hundred dollars, but not $50,000!”
Lucky, indeed! The wife of the winning duo also won $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5 in 2017.
When claiming this prize at the Lottery’s Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, the grandparents said they will use the $50,000 for Christmas, a vacation and will save the rest.
