Baltimore Lottery Player Pouring $50,000 Win Into Investment Property

Zip code of North Carolina property proves just the ticket for hitting a big prize

Lots of people have daydreams of not having to work anymore. For one Baltimore man, a $50,000 Pick 5 prize won’t exactly make that dream a reality, but he does plan on using it as a start.

“I want the money to work for me!” he said after visiting the Maryland Lottery’s office to claim his prize.

Investing in his future was part of his plan long before he hit Pick 5, and it’s actually part of the reason for his win. He recently purchased a property in North Carolina and decided to play a North Carolina zip code in Pick 5: 28001. On Oct. 22, that postal code was the winning number in the Evening Pick 5 drawing.

“It’s got some fix ups, then I’m going to rent it out,” he said of the property, adding that his Lottery winnings will come handy as he makes renovations.

He learned of his win while at a store buying tickets for a new day.

“I always look at the screen and I saw the Pick 3 and Pick 4, but I wasn’t paying attention when Pick 5 was on,” he recalled. “Then I looked again — did a double take. I couldn’t believe it.”

In addition to playing the daily Pick games, the winner is also fond of Racetrax and Keno, as well as the rolling jackpot games. The attraction?

“It’s just a chance to win!”

He bought his winning Pick 5 ticket at the Victory 1 store at 270 East Green Street in Westminster. The Carroll County retailer receives a bonus of $500, equal to 1% of the prize, for selling the winning ticket.
