Bel Air Retiree Ponders Options for $50,000 Powerball Prize

Grandchildren will benefit while home renovations, vacation are possible

His wife says he’s been playing Mega Millions, Powerball and Multi-Match for “years and years and years” but now that a Bel Air man finally won, he isn’t sure what to do with his $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize.

A retiree who recently purchased a new vehicle, he told Lottery officials when he claimed his prize that he has no pressing needs. Most likely, the windfall will pay for a vacation, or possibly some home remodeling, and his grandchildren will benefit.

Previously, his personal best win was $400, and he also has picked up prizes ranging from $2 to $20. He discovered Lottery luck had come his way the morning after the July 17 drawing. As usual, he woke up and checked tickets from the previous evening’s drawings. A little unsure after seeing he had matched four regular balls plus the Powerball, the Harford County grandpa decided to take the quick-pick ticket to a Lottery retailer and double-check it for a win. He slipped inside, scanned it and got a message telling him to take the ticket to Lottery headquarters. The winner then slipped out of the store and made an appointment to cash in his ticket in Baltimore.

He bought his $8 four-line ticket at the 7-Eleven store at 806 Conowingo Road in Bel Air. This was the 36th third-tier prize-winning Powerball ticket sold in Maryland in 2024. Want to try your luck? There’s still plenty of time for players to get tickets to tonight’s Powerball drawing. Up for grabs is an estimated jackpot of $102 million with an estimated cash option of $48.9 million.
