Pick 4 player prompted by husband to try his favorite game
An avid Pick 4 player, following her husband’s suggestion, changed up her Lottery game and scored a $52,019.80 Racetrax win on a ticket bought at a Capitol Heights market.
“My hubby always plays Racetrax and it was his idea for me to try it. I was just lucky!” said the 51-year-old from Washington, D.C.
After claiming her prize at Lottery headquarters, the winner recalled shopping with her husband on Jan. 30 and, unknowingly, buying a plant that symbolizes good fortune. She later researched it and discovered the plant variety is sometimes referred to as a money plant.
Flash forward to Groundhog Day and the married pair are running errands. They stopped at Best One Food Market in Capitol Heights. On her husband’s suggestion, the wife added a Racetrax ticket to her Pick 4 purchase. The player placed a Superfecta Box bet for 10 drawings on the long-odds horses 8, 10, 11 and 12. The horses finished 12, 11, 10 and 8, but the pair didn’t know it. She had given the tickets to her husband as they left the store and the two had gone their separate ways.
A little later, the husband called the wife to report the big win. His call came during an online training session at work.
“He called me, screaming I had won,” she said. “I had no idea what was going on, and he kept saying, ‘You hit, you hit!’ ”
His wife didn’t believe him so they both took a lunch break, met at a Lottery retailer and checked the ticket. Sure enough, she won $52,019.80.
Asked about plans for the windfall, the winner said, “This economy is so unpredictable. We are putting it away for retirement. I just went back to work like any other day.”
Although the two have no big celebrations in mind, they do plan to increase their contribution to their church.
The retailer, Best One Food Market located at 6306 Addison Road, picks up a bonus of $520.19 for selling a winning Racetrax ticket worth $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1% of the prize.
