George Richardson of Churchton was the first person to claim a $50,000 top prize on the new Multiplier Money scratch-off.
Repeat winner used previous $50,000 prize to start a grass-cutting business
Maryland Lottery enthusiast George Richardson of Churchton usually starts his fun and games by playing Pick 3 and Pick 4, in a range of the nearly two dozen betting options.
“If I hit, I buy four scratch-offs,” he says.
When that scenario played out recently, the result was a $50,000 payday. George and his fianceé stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on July 26 to claim his latest prize and tell his winning story.
The Anne Arundel County resident collected his Pick 3 and Pick 4 Lottery winnings that day and purchased his customary four scratch-off tickets at Captain Kidd’s Liquors in Deale. Following his routine, he chose instant tickets that are relatively new in the Maryland Lottery scratch-off lineup.
The 70-year-old took them to his Churchton home, scratched off three of the games and then waited for his fianceé to arrive before starting to scratch the fourth instant ticket. That game was the $5 Multiplier Money scratch-off.
At the top of his instant ticket, George cleared the latex from a spot that says “10X WINNING NUMBER,” which gave 27 as the spot to hit. He then revealed all of the numbers in the play area and found a 27 in one of the 15 spots. Under the 27 was the prize amount of $5,000. The two were surprised, and delighted, but also realistic.
“This is the second time I’ve hit for $50,000. I’ve hit $5,000 quite a few times,”
George explains. His first $50,000 win was in late 2014 and he used the proceeds from that windfall to start a grass-cutting business. For this win, “I’m going to take my time,” he said of making plans to spend the prize.
For selling a top-prize winning scratch-off, Captain Kidd’s Liquors located at 5823 Deale-Churchton Road in Anne Arundel County receives a bonus of $500 from the Lottery.
The Multiplier Money instant ticket arrived in stores July 19 and is among the newest $5 games available. George is the first person to win one of the game’s eight $50,000 prizes.
