Brooklyn Park player wins $100,000 on scratch-off after early morning purchase
For years, a night-shift delivery driver from Brooklyn Park has heard the same thing from the clerk at the gas station where he stops to buy Maryland Lottery games. The clerk always quips: “This is a very lucky ticket.”
Early on the morning of Oct. 19, the clerk was right. The $100,000 Extreme Cash ticket the driver purchased turned out to be worth the full $100,000 top prize. The first thing he did was inform his wife.
“He asked me if I was sitting down and I said, ‘It’s 4 in the morning. I’m in bed,’” she recalled while the anonymous pair shared their winning story with Lottery officials. “Then he told me, ‘I think I just won $100,000.’”
By Oct. 21 when the couple claimed the prize, their shock had mainly worn off but the smiles and excitement remained in full force. They haven’t given much thought about what to do with the windfall other than pay off their mortgage.
“We only have four payments left. We were going to pay it off as a Christmas present to each other,” the driver said. After that, they will have a substantial amount of the prize remaining.
“We’re going to treat ourselves,” the wife said, with her husband adding, “It’s going to be a heck of a Christmas, I can tell you that!”
Also picking up an early holiday present is the Hawkins Point Citgo gas station, which sold the winning scratch-off. The Baltimore City retailer located at 6301 Efficiency Way receives a bonus of $1,000 for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off of $100,000 or more.
