Eastern Shore Mom Unknowingly Selects $100,000 Winning Game for Son

He claims top prize on Money Rush scratch-off

A Dorchester County man who rarely plays Maryland Lottery games, but his mom, is an avid scratch-offs fan. She favors $10 and $20 instant tickets and encourages him, without much success, to try his luck, too.

Earlier this week, the Eastern Shore resident took his mom to Short Stop in Cambridge so she could buy scratch-offs and she again suggested he play a game or two. “I was like, ‘I’ll go for a $10 ticket,’” he said. “I let her pick it for me.”

After she selected the $10 Money Rush game, he scratched off the instant ticket’s prize check area. He then gave it to the clerk to scan the ticket and reveal the outcome. The astonished clerk printed out a piece of paper showing the $100,000 top-prize amount and that’s when shock set in, the winner said.

“I looked at it and I was like, to my mom, ‘We gotta go.’” He recalls she was shaking with excitement.

Once they were home, he remained in shock. “It was an hour later and I said, ‘I never scratched the numbers to see where they were.’” He finally revealed all of the winning numbers in the play area to confirm his win. “It still doesn’t feel real,” he said.

Employed in management in the nonprofit sector, the winner said he plans to give his mom some of the prize since she selected the lucky scratch-off and encouraged him to play. He will put the bulk of the prize into savings and may financially help some family members.

His lucky Lottery retailer also is a winner. For selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, Short Stop at 911 Washington Street in Cambridge will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.

The Money Rush game, which went on sale in July, still has six of its nine $100,000 top prizes remaining to be claimed. Also still unclaimed are eight $50,000 prizes, 23 $10,000 prizes and thousands of others ranging from $10 to $1,000.
