Player claims $88,000 prize playing Electric 8s scratch-off
A Western Maryland man is all abuzz after winning an $88,000 prize playing the Electric 8s instant ticket. His shocking win came last weekend while he was out shopping with his wife.
The lucky player was running errands when he decided to stop at Parkview Liquors in Cumberland to buy scratch-offs. He bought four games, including an Electric 8s instant ticket. He and his wife then headed home, where the Allegany County man began scratching off his games. The final instant ticket he prepared to scratch contained the big win.
“I told my wife, ‘Well, this is all or nothing,’” the winner told Lottery officials after claiming the prize in Baltimore. The Cumberland resident then scratched the $10 Electric 8s game and revealed a matching winning number. He was stunned when he saw the prize that appeared below the number.
“It was $88,000,” he said, smiling. “I thought, ‘This can’t be!’”
The auto technician showed his wife the instant ticket for further confirmation before they returned to the Lottery retailer for an official confirmation. He was definitely the first top-prize winner in the game, which has been on sale since November 2023.
After celebrating with his wife, the big winner made an appointment to claim the prize. He told Lottery officials that he will use the newfound fortune to pay off his car loan, do some home improvements, go on a vacation and boost his savings account.
Electric 8s debuted with eight $88,000 top prizes; seven remain. Also up for grabs are 17 $10,000 prizes and many more ranging from $10 to $1,000.
Parkview Liquors is celebrating this win as well. The Lottery retailer, located at 82 Greene Street in Cumberland, will receive a bonus of $880 from the Lottery for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off. The same store also sold a $50,000-winning Bonus Match 5 ticket in May.
