Third-tier prize in Jan. 13 drawing goes to Anne Arundel County couple
Every Friday, a Crofton couple winds down the week with dinner out. Their work week can be stressful and they like to have a relaxing dinner to decompress. One Friday in January, they added a sweet treat to their delicious meal — a $50,000-winning Powerball ticket.
The husband and wife enjoy playing both Mega Millions and Powerball. Back on Friday, Jan. 10, they left a local restaurant and stopped at a 7-Eleven located at 2129 Defense Highway in Crofton to play some Lottery games. In all, they purchased five tickets, including two Powerball tickets.
They let the terminal quick-pick one ticket for the Monday, Jan. 13 drawing and chose their numbers for the second ticket. The Anne Arundel County residents then put the tickets away and headed home. It was nearly a week later before they received the good news that their $2 quick-pick ticket was a $50,000 third-tier winner.
“We didn’t watch the drawings, so we had no idea,” said the husband. “We actually found out on a Facebook post,” added the wife.
Apparently, the 7-Eleven where they purchased the tickets revealed that a $50,000-winning Powerball ticket was bought at the location. The couple, curious, grabbed their tickets to check them and realized they were the lucky winners. They matched four white balls and the red Powerball to win the $50,000 prize!
“We’ve been trying and trying and finally we did it,” said the husband.
The information technology specialists happily claimed their prize recently at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. They plan to use their winnings to pay bills.
There is still time to buy a ticket for the Feb. 12 Powerball drawing, which has an estimated jackpot annuity of $154 million. The estimated cash option is $71.4 million.
