Grocery Shopper Bags $50,000-Winning Powerball Prize

Cecil County mom putting windfall into her retirement fund

Playing Lottery games is an occasional treat for a northern Maryland mom, who found herself on June 22 at a Belcamp grocery store with an extra $4 in cash on hand. Her decision to buy a Mega Millions ticket and a quick-pick Powerball ticket helped the lucky lady bag a $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize in that night’s drawing.

She visited Klein’s ShopRite at 1321 Riverside Parkway in Belcamp to try her luck. The Cecil County resident bought the two tickets and went on her way. Time passed and then a friend encouraged her to check her numbers.

The mother of two adult sons recalls being in her parked car, ready to head out, when she decided to check her tickets on the Lottery app. The Mega Millions ticket was a non-winner but the matching numbers on her Powerball ticket got her heart beating faster.

“Oh, is that $500? Is that $5,000? Is that $50,000?” she recalls asking herself before she returned to the house to show the Powerball ticket to her friend. “He was very excited,” she said.

The winner signed the ticket and hid it at her friend’s place until claiming the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The player plans to put the windfall into her retirement fund to enjoy when she stops working. She was one of 11 Powerball players nationwide to win a third-tier prize in the June 22 drawing and is one of 34 Maryland winners of $50,000 Powerball prizes in 2024.
