Hagerstown’s “Lucky Sgt.” enters the Lottery Winner’s Circle for the third time in five years after claiming another big Racetrax prize.
Lucky player claims $19,740 prize playing Racetrax
Winning a big Racetrax prize is wonderful but winning three big Racetrax prizes in five years is awesome! A 63-year-old Hagerstown player is a triple Racetrax winner. In May 2017, he galloped into the Lottery’s Winner’s Circle after winning twice for $15,252. He returned this week to collect a $19,740 prize on a Superfecta wager.
“Lucky Sgt.,” a nickname he chose back in 2017 for publicity purposes, normally plays his own numbers: 4, 8, 5 and 6. These special numbers, he says, brought him luck on two $20 Superfecta tickets he won with one week apart back in 2017. This time around the track, horses 5, 8, 10 and 2 crossed the finish line on June 6 in that order to give him a $19,740 win on a quick-pick ticket. “Lucky Sgt.” said it was feeling that led him to purchase a Racetrax ticket that day.
“I was home watching a replay of the Olympics when something said, ‘Go play,’” he said.
Heeding that inner voice, the Washington County resident headed to the Sharpsburg Pike Liberty gas station in Hagerstown. He played his regular numbers as well as the one 20-draw quick-pick ticket. “Lucky Sgt.” was back home when he checked the tickets for a win.
“I thought, ‘Wait a minute, those numbers are familiar,’” recalled the married father of two adult children. “I wasn’t sure how much I won, but the cashier told me when I went back there to have it confirmed. I think she was more excited than me.”
The winner didn’t want to waste any time, so he went to his car and immediately made an appointment to claim the prize at Lottery headquarters the very next day. Back at home, he shared the news of his good fortune with his wife.
“I was talking to a friend on the phone about someone we knew winning the Lottery,” said “Lucky Sgt.’s” wife, who accompanied him to claim his prize. “Then, he shows me this ticket that says he won $19,740.”
The retired U.S. Army sergeant and retired U.S. Postal Service worker said he’ll use some of the winnings toward a trip with his wife and will save the rest.
The Washington County store that sold “Lucky Sgt.” the winning ticket also shares in the excitement, Sharpsburg Pike Liberty located at 10524 Sharpsburg Pike earns a bonus of $197.40 from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1% of the prize.
