A Joker’s Wild scratch-off gave “Local Philanthropist” of Hagerstown a $50,000 top prize.
Player credits generosity for good luck with second big scratch-off win in two years
A Western Maryland player happily returned to Lottery headquarters recently after winning a $50,000 top prize on the $5 Joker’s Wild scratch-off. This prize is his second big win in two years.
The retired maintenance worker, who is using the nickname “Local Philanthropist” to share the story of his latest encounter with Lottery luck, also won $100,000 on an In the Money scratch-off in September 2023. He said he is still helping out his neighbors and he believes that is how good luck found him again.
“It’s all about doing good deeds,” said “Local Philanthropist,” who said he still cuts neighbors’ lawns and takes them to the grocery store.
For this big win, “Local Philanthropist” visited Sheetz in Hagerstown to buy the scratch-off. After he scratched the instant ticket, he noticed the play area revealed 10 prizes of $5,000. All of those numbers matched with the four winning numbers to give him a $50,000 prize.
“When I was scratching, I saw a lot of $5,000s. I knew it was good,” said the Washington County resident.
“Local Philanthropist” said he plans to continue helping others and will use his prize to aid a family member in need. Also helped by the win was Sheetz, located at 1333 Dual Highway in Hagerstown. The Washington County retailer will receive a $500 Lottery bonus for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning ticket.
Joker’s Wild went on sale July 22 with eight top prizes of $50,000. “Local Philanthropist” is the fourth top-prize winner. Four $50,000 prizes remain along with prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
