Harford County Woman $50,000 Richer after Rushed Scratch-off Purchases

Winds up with top-prize win in $5 game

A brother and sister scratch-off team won prizes on two of the five MONOPOLY X20 instant tickets she purchased that day, but her windfall has quite a few more zeros in it than his! The Harford County woman won $50,000; her sibling won $25.

“I won the big one,” she remembers saying to him in disbelief.

Her journey to the biggest Lottery payday of her life began when her sibling, known as the family “go-to guy,” was driving her home from a family member’s house. When he asked if she needed to make a stop along the way, the sister initially declined, saying, “I’m really in a hurry.” She then agreed to a quick stop at Clinton Crossings Exxon in Prince George’s County.

Noting that she is very friendly and likes to talk with people, the brother said the quick stop was anything but quick. He finally said, “Let’s go” and she purchased the five tickets. The mother of one shared two of the games with him before he dropped her off. Later, they played the scratch-offs at their separate houses and he revealed a $25 prize. Then, his phone rang.

“She called me and said, ‘Sit down,’” the brother recalled. “I said, ‘What is it?’ And she said, ‘I got the big one.’”

Both of them use Lottery apps to scan their tickets for prizes and he wound up taking a screenshot of the congratulations message that appeared with her $50,000 top-prize win. “She said, ‘We’ve never seen so many zeros on this app,’” recalled the brother.

Why did they pick the MONOPOLY X20 game? The brother likes to research numbers of unclaimed top prizes on Lottery scratch-offs and this game, which is licensed by Scientific Games, LLC, still had seven of its eight $50,000 top prizes remaining. Now, there are six!

The winner is uncertain about what she will do with her big prize but planned to give her financial planner a call after leaving Lottery headquarters. The lucky government employee isn’t the only one who wins! For selling the $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, Clinton Crossings Exxon at 8915 Woodyard Road in Clinton will receive a $500 Lottery bonus.

The $5 MONOPOLY X20 game went on sale on Jan. 13 as part of a Maryland Lottery family of MONOPOLY games and a MONOPOLY Second-Chance Promotion. Players can enter any of the six non-winning MONOPOLY scratch-offs into My Lottery Rewards for a chance to win a rolling cash jackpot or cash prize. Monthly drawings through July will award $5,000 prizes and rolling cash jackpots that start at $10,000 and grow until the drawing date.
