Western Maryland woman enjoys big win playing MONOPOLY X50 game
If you’re eating at a restaurant in Washington County and your server has a big smile and a twinkle in her eye, she might be the latest $50,000 second-tier winner from the MONOPOLY X50 game.
The scratch-off from the Maryland Lottery and licensed by Scientific Games, LLC was one of four she bought at High’s in Hagerstown on her way to work. She visits a variety of Lottery retailers in the area and just happened to pick that location on the day of her big win.
“After work, I like to do my scratch-offs,” she said. The winner recalls sitting in her car, waiting for it to warm up on that cold night after work, and scratching off the first three games to find only non-winners. The Hagerstown woman said she always plays the scratch-offs and then scans them using the Lottery app on her phone just to be sure she hasn’t missed a prize.
She routinely buys four instant tickets in a game at a time, saying, “I usually win something.” That something could range from a small prize to $250 or $500, which was her previous high score. Sitting in her car, hoping for a win, she turned to the fourth and final $10 scratch-off and revealed its winning numbers and then the player’s numbers.
“I didn’t think it was a winner,” she said, but scanned the prize check area like she always does. A strange message appeared. “It said to check with the retailer,” recalled the restaurant worker. “I’m looking at the ticket and I was like, ‘What number is matching?’”
The number 15 was a match and the prize beneath was $50,000.
Startled, she drove to another Lottery retailer and asked a cashier to scan the scratch-off for a win. “I said, ‘Does that say what I think it does?’” When the store clerk confirmed the win, the winner warned the employee, “I’m going to scream really loud” and then began shouting and celebrating in the empty store.
“I’m happy if I see $100,” she said. “I couldn’t believe I won.”
The happy grandmother shared her great news with a few friends, her father and her ex-husband, who came with her to Lottery headquarters to see her claim the prize. She isn’t certain yet what she’ll do with the windfall but noted that a small vacation could be in her future.
The $10 MONOPOLY X50 scratch-off went on sale Jan. 13 as part of a Maryland Lottery family of MONOPOLY games and a MONOPOLY Second-Chance Promotion. Players can enter any of the six non-winning MONOPOLY scratch-offs into My Lottery Rewards for a chance to win a rolling cash jackpot or cash prize. Monthly second-chance drawings through July will award $5,000 prizes and rolling cash jackpots that start at $10,000 and grow until the drawing date.
