Lady Luck Gives Kent County Man $50,000 Retirement Gift

Retiree didn’t know about his third-tier Powerball prize until weeks later

An Eastern Shore resident who packed up his equipment operator gear for the last time, bidding farewell to his career, received an unexpected retirement gift from Lady Luck. He won a $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize in the April 27 drawing. The happy player didn’t even realize he won until recently!

The Kent County man is a loyal Powerball player and regularly purchases tickets for all three weekly drawings at Kent County’s Double Tap Tavern, located at 34214 Bradford Johnson Road in Golts. He purchases tickets every few days but doesn’t check them until weeks later. That was the case with his $50,000 winning quick-pick ticket. His winning drawing took place three days before he retired.

“I didn’t realize it at the time but this was my retirement bonus,” he said with a smile.

The winner recalls his excitement when he scanned the $2 ticket for a win and saw a “Go to Lottery” message. He handed the ticket over to the clerk, who confirmed the prize. “When I saw it was $50,000, I said ‘Oh yeah!’”

He plans to use the prize to pay bills and boost his retirement fund. The winner likes to hunt and fish and plans to pursue those hobbies more often since he is retired.

Although the Powerball jackpot was recently hit, Maryland is encouraging players to try their luck through a Powerball Jackpot Reset promotion under way now through May 21. Purchase a Powerball ticket during the promotional period and get the chance to receive, at random, a free $2 Mega Millions ticket. Check out the promotion details here.
