Winner claims $150,000 top prize after previously hitting for $100,000 in August 2013
Woodworking, stamp collecting, bird watching and quilting are all worthy hobbies, but a Baltimore woman’s leisure activity actually puts cash in her bank account. Playing Maryland Lottery scratch-offs has twice resulted in winning six-digit prizes.
Most recently, on Nov. 12, she collected $150,000 on the $10 $150,000 Extreme game. In August of 2013, she won $100,000 on a game called 40 Rubies.
“I play every day. It’s a hobby. That’s what I enjoy,” the winner said after claiming her most recent big prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
While some of the proceeds from the windfall will go toward making upgrades to her house, the retiree said most of the prize will go to her family and children to “just make life a little better.” A daughter, who accompanied her winning mom, confirmed that her mom shared the wealth last time she won big.
Asked if she planned to continue playing the Lottery now that she’s scored two large prizes, the winner simply replied, “Oh, sure!”
Mainly she plays scratch-offs at the $10, $20 and $30 level. Over the years, she has won many relatively low-level prizes.
“I’ve won $1,000 several times,” she noted. In this case, she chose the $150,000 Extreme instant ticket because it is an unusually large size. She was drawn by the novelty and because it is relatively new, having gone on sale in March.
The Baltimore player’s top prize win of $150,000 was the third of five claimed to date, leaving another two big prizes available along with 12 at the $10,000 level, 17 at the $1,000 level and thousands more ranging from $10 to $500.
She bought the winning instant ticket at Rt. 40 Sunoco located at 5612 Baltimore National Pike in Catonsville. The Baltimore County business receives a Lottery bonus of $1,000 for selling the top-tier winning scratch-off.
