Lottery Luck Serves $50,000 Top Prize to Baltimore County Waitress

Claims big win playing 9th edition of Deluxe Crossword game

A Baltimore County woman told Lottery officials on Thursday that, while she enjoys playing scratch-offs very much, she doesn’t often think to buy them. Happily for her, when a family member announced that he was stopping for Lottery tickets on his way to work earlier this week, she was reminded of how much fun they are.

“I had a $5 bill in my purse, so I asked him to buy me a scratch ticket while he was at the store,” the waitress explained. “I told him I didn’t care which game, any would do.” Whatever twist of fate it was that caused him to pick out the $5 Deluxe Crossword game, it added $50,000 to her bank account.

“When I scratched the ticket that night, I was amazed. Totally in shock.” With adrenaline surging, she vaulted up the stairs to share her happy news with the family. “They told me later that when they saw my face, they thought I’d gone crazy.” As the excited group passed the winning instant ticket around for all to see, everyone started shouting. “We all went a little bit crazy.”

The fateful scratch-off selection happened at the Carroll Fuel gas station at 900 Taylor Avenue in Baltimore. As seller of the $50,000 top-prize winning instant ticket, management there earned a $500 Lottery bonus. The ninth edition of the Deluxe Crossword game became available in September with eight top prizes. Six remain, along with 13 $10,000 second-tier prizes.
