Lottery Winnings Bloom for Washington County Gardener

Claims $50,000 Bonus Match 5 top prize

A Washington County man who enjoys gardening is basking in the glow of a $50,000 prize he won playing Bonus Match 5. The lucky Lottery player’s quick-pick ticket was a big winner in the May 3 drawing.

The retired U.S. Postal Service worker and Vietnam veteran is really enjoying retirement. In his pastime, he likes to plant flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. He also enjoys playing Lottery games, specifically the jackpot games and Bonus Match 5. He said a $400 win on Bonus Match 5 led to his much bigger quick-pick win.

“I was in a good mood from winning,” said the Western Maryland resident. “So, I bought some extra tickets that day.”

That evening, after the May 3 drawing, the big winner checked the numbers by calling the Lottery’s winning numbers line.

“I was going down the list and the very last line was where I matched,” he said. “I couldn’t really sleep after that.”

The married father and grandfather made the trip to Baltimore earlier this week to claim his $50,000 prize. He shared with Lottery officials that he will use his winnings for a new air conditioner and plans to put some funds aside for his grandchildren.

Alex Convenience Store, located at 280 N. Main Street in Boonsboro, is also celebrating the win. The Washington County Lottery retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $50,000 top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket. This is the 14th top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket sold in 2024.
