Military Officer and Wife Win $50K Powerball Double Play Prize

Couple missed $10 million jackpot by one number

A Prince George’s County man and his wife, loyal Powerball players, were happy when they checked their Double Play ticket to find they matched four out five numbers along with the Powerball for a $50,000 prize.

“This is the first time in 30 years of playing Powerball that we have won this much,” he said.

The winning Double Play numbers from the Monday, April 21 drawing were 18, 23, 34, 35 and 67; the Powerball was 13. Our winner had 37 instead of 35 and just missed out on the top Double Play prize.

Double Play is a second drawing that occurs 30 minutes after each Powerball drawing, giving players a chance to win up to $10 million with the same ticket numbers. Players can add the feature to Powerball tickets for $1.

The man said he always purchases the Double Play option for an additional dollar to help increase his chances to win “For an extra $1, why not. It paid off for us,” said the military officer.

The couple loves to travel. They plan to place the prize in the bank to possibly use it later to travel to more destinations throughout the world.

The Double Play third-tier winning ticket was sold at a Prince George’s County Exxon, located at 6500 Suitland Road in Morningside.

The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 with a jackpot at an estimated $168 million annuity, and an estimated cash option of $77.1 million.
