Montgomery County woman claims $31,233 prize playing popular game
A Silver Spring resident who casually plays Mega Millions, Powerball and Multi-Match decided to try something new and won $31,233. The lucky lady, who was out with friends, placed a Racetrax Trifecta bet on six races to win the big purse.
The July 4 holiday had just passed and the public health worker joined a group of friends at the Town Center Market in Riverdale that Friday for food, drinks and fun. After a bit, she decided to play Lottery games.
“I wanted to try something different,” said the single mother of two. “So, I went to the machine and played Racetrax.”
The big winner placed a $6 Trifecta bet for the horses 12, 10 and 11 to cross the finish line in that exact order. She went back to the table with her friends and wasn’t paying attention when her races occurred and completely missed seeing her winning game.
“My friends urged me to check my ticket, so I went to the scanner,” she said, smiling. “I was shocked when I saw the amount because I have never won that amount of money ever.”
The happy player shared the good news with her friends, who were all very excited for her. She was excited, too, and bought drinks for everyone at her table.
The Montgomery County resident later made an appointment to claim her prize this week at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. She told Lottery officials that she plans to use some of the winnings for her son’s college tuition and will also use some funds to update her home.
Her lucky retailer, Town Center Market located at 4705 Queensbury Road in Riverdale, is also celebrating. The Maryland Lottery retailer will receive a $312.33 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more.
