Ocean City man checks his Pick 5 ticket while waiting for coffee to brew
A night shift truck driver from Worcester County was asleep when he hit the March 22 midday Pick 5 drawing for $50,000.
He woke up for work, put on a pot of coffee and figured he had a few minutes to check his tickets using the Lottery smartphone app. It flashed up the big prize, which gave him a bit of a shock. The 67-year-old checked it again.
Sure enough, he matched 8, 1, 1. 6 and 4 on a $1 straight bet. A loyal player for years, the Ocean City resident favors scratch-offs and Bonus Match 5. When Pick 5 made its debut in February, he started playing the new game, attracted by the prospect of “winning $50,000 off a dollar bet.”
The lucky player plans to put the prize in his retirement account and possibly share some of the funds with his adult children. Originally from Baltimore, the winner moved to Ocean City and plans to retire there in a few years. When not driving a truck, he enjoys ocean fishing for flounder, tuna and tautog. When he retires, he may invest in a bigger boat so he can go farther out to sea to pursue bigger gamefish.
Also recording a catch on the winning ticket is 7-Eleven #23819 at 11911 Coastal Highway in Ocean City. The Worcester County retailer picks up a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Pick 5 ticket worth $50,000. The bonus is equal to 1% of the prize.
