Finds big win with 10-spot quick-pick ticket
Visiting Maryland to care for her father put a Keno player from Charlotte, N.C., in the right store at the right time for a $40,000 prize.
The lucky mother of two and grandmother of two says she always plays Keno when she visits Maryland. She favors retailers that have a positive vibe or energy in their stores. Her favorite retailer is D&S General Store in Mitchellville, where the employees know her. “They have a certain energy in that place when I go there,” she said.
A fan of the game, she often wins with 2-spot bets based on number combinations tied to family members’ birth dates. She usually adds on a 10-spot bet just for fun. On Aug. 26, the 61-year-old bought five 2-spot tickets and one quick-pick 10-spot ticket with the Super Bonus multiplier feature. She initially thought she matched five of the 10 numbers until she scanned the ticket while still at the store. When the message said to see the retailer, she did.
The clerk scanned the ticket and it rang up as a $40,000 winner. “We just stood there and stared at each other,” the winner said. “The lady said it couldn’t happen to a nicer person.”
The happy winner waited a day to call her husband of 38 years to share news of her good fortune. I said, ‘I am going to tell you something but don’t freak out.’ ” At first, he doubted her news. She turned him into a believer by sharing a screenshot on her phone of the Lottery terminal receipt showing the big win. Her plans for enjoying the prize remain uncertain, other than helping her son with expenses for a long-distance job interview and putting the windfall into the bank.
Also in the winner’s circle is her lucky Lottery retailer. D&S General Store located at 3507 Enterprise Road in Mitchellville earns a $400 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Keno ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1% of the prize.
