Washington County player uses own numbers to win big prize
A Washington County man, who is celebrating a birthday this week, is overjoyed after winning $50,000 playing the popular Pick 5 game. The avid Maryland Lottery Pick 3/4/5 player used numbers that were meaningful to him to play in the evening drawing on Sunday, Sept. 18.
The father of two sons enjoys playing the Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5 games and he does so almost daily for the midday and evening drawings. Last Sunday, he was out and about when he remembered to play his games for the midday drawings. The big winner stopped in 7-Star Mini Mart located at 200 West Franklin Street in Hagerstown.
In addition to Pick 3 and Pick 4, the Hagerstown resident also played a number he liked, 61243, for $1 straight in the Pick 5 game. He was on FaceTime with his brother later that day when he learned his lucky day had arrived.
“My brother mentioned how he had not played his numbers for the day, which made me think about my numbers,” the player said. “I asked him to call the winning numbers out to me.”
His brother began reciting the winning midday numbers for the three games and then read the number 61243 aloud for Pick 5.
“I told him that number was familiar,” recalled the lucky player. “I showed him my ticket and he said, ‘Yup, you hit!’”
A shipping supervisor who also buys and sells cars, the winner calmly continued on with his Sunday routine of watching football and relaxing. He thought about what a nice gift the win was, especially since he had a birthday this week.
When the 50-year-old claimed the prize, he told Lottery officials he plans to share some of the winnings with his mother and brother. He also might put some money down on a rental property.
His lucky Lottery retailer, 7-Star Mini Mart, is celebrating, too. The business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Pick 5 ticket worth $50,000.
