“Persistent Player” of Salisbury changed up his Pick 5 number and won $50,000.
‘Persistent Player’ in the money after deluged with messages seeking cash
An Eastern Shore man is $50,000 richer after using the phone number tied to a would-be solicitor’s text message for his Pick 5 bet.
The anonymous winner is calling himself “Persistent Player” because he buys Lottery games daily. The Salisbury man uses multiple sets of numbers, such as license plates and birthdays, for Pick 5 digits. That routine changed, however, on July 20.
“Persistent Player” said he received multiple text messages from a number asking for money. In fact, he received so many text messages from the same number that the five digits got stuck in his head. He decided to add them to his number rotation.
“They kept calling and texting me and I said, ‘I am going to use that scammer to my advantage,’” noted the happy winner with a grin. The Wicomico County resident was amazed that the numbers 34268 made him a $50,000 winner in the July 20 evening drawing. He had placed a $1 straight bet at Walmart #1890.
According to the business owner, he will use the prize to pay bills and place leftover funds in the bank. “Persistent Player” said the key to success is to play within your means and don’t change your numbers.
“I try to stay persistent and consistent,” he said.
One retailer’s management is glad he was persistent. The Salisbury Walmart, located at 2702 North Salisbury Boulevard, receives a $500 Lottery bonus for selling the $50,000 winning Pick 5 ticket.
