Player stunned by $50,000 third-tier prize won in Dec. 2 drawing
A longtime Lottery player was so shocked by her recent $50,000 third-tier Powerball win that she became ill from the excitement. The Montgomery County woman won the big prize in the Dec. 2 drawing.
A certified nursing assistant, she was chasing a $224 million Powerball jackpot annuity when she stopped at a Takoma Park 7-Eleven after work to play that game and other Lottery favorites. The Silver Spring resident made her purchases and went home, not thinking about the $2 Powerball ticket until the following week.
“I scanned it and I couldn’t believe it said I was a $50,000 winner,” said the winner. “I couldn’t breathe.”
The shocked lady needed some assistance, so she called her daughter to take a look at the ticket and confirm the third-tier prize.
“When I saw her matching numbers, I did a little dance,” said the daughter, who accompanied her mother to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize. “She was stressing over it and was really making herself sick.”
Because the winner was so worked up, the daughter scheduled the appointment for her mother to claim the prize. They came together earlier this week to Lottery headquarters.
The winner, who had calmed down by the time she arrived in the Lottery Winner’s Circle, shared that she plans to pay bills with her windfall. The stunned player purchased the ticket from 7-Eleven #11666, located at 900 Merrimac Drive in Takoma Park.
The Powerball jackpot continued to grow until being hit in New York on Dec. 7 for $256 million. Maryland players can still enjoy the fun of Powerball through a new Powerball Jackpot Reset promotion. For two weeks from the date the jackpot is hit, players who buy a Powerball ticket now through Dec. 22 could win a free $2 Mega Millions ticket. The estimated jackpot annuity for Saturday’s Powerball drawing is $88 million with an estimated cash option of $41 million.
