Household improvements on menu for Carroll County couple
He was on his way to work with an extra $5 in his pocket, so he bought two $1 Maryland Lottery scratch-offs and one $3 ticket, scratched them and won $30,000 on the $3 ticket.
“I was definitely in shock,” the Taneytown player said Dec. 20 after claiming his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
After buying his tickets the morning of Dec. 18 at the 7-Eleven store at 11922 Main Street in Libertytown, the Taneytown player scratched them in his truck. First, he scratched the two $1 ticket and came up empty. Then he scratched the $3 Diamond Bingo ticket and, on the fourth of four bingo cards, he matched the caller’s numbers as an X, checked the legend and realized it was a $30,000 winner.
“I about fell out of the truck. I checked it six times. Then when I got to work I checked it again,” he said. He kept the news to himself all day at work, took the ticket home to his wife and showed it to her. She also was taken aback.
The winner started playing the Lottery with his grandmother when he was 18, so he took the ticket and showed her. While she has won before, no prize as large as $30,000.
“She cried,” the winner said.
While the prize isn’t a life-changing amount, the winner said, “It’s a big help.”
Discussions about what to do with the money include paying off the balance on a family vehicle, and then using the rest to either finish a garage or put an addition on the house.
The 7-Eleven where the ticket was purchased receives a bonus of $300, equal to 1% of the prize.
