The Week in Winners: $1 Million Mega Millions Ticket Sold in Bel Air as Jackpot Rolls

Lottery prizes last week totaled more than $31.3 million, with 19 tickets worth $10,000 or more

As the Mega Millions jackpot ballooned to nearly three quarters of a billion dollars, a second-tier winning ticket sold last week made a Maryland Lottery player in Bel Air a millionaire. Meanwhile, a scratch-off player in Reisterstown won a $200,000 prize, and a ticket purchased in Waldorf generated a $100,000 win.

The $1 million Bel Air prize remained unclaimed as of Dec. 16 — the winner has 182 days from the Dec. 10 drawing date to redeem the ticket. The last Mega Millions jackpot ($810 million) was hit Sept. 10 in Texas. During the current jackpot roll, there has been one other second-tier $1 million winner in Maryland (Anne Arundel County), and six third-tier winners have claimed prizes of $40,000 (Prince George’s County), $20,000 (Baltimore County), and $10,000 (Harford, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Wicomico counties).

The next Mega Millions drawing is Dec. 17 and the estimated jackpot is $740 million with a cash option of $342.9 million. If the jackpot is hit at $740 million, it would be the eighth-largest in Mega Millions history.

Across the state, and across all games, the Maryland Lottery paid more than $31.3 million in prizes during the week of Dec. 9-15, including 19 tickets worth $10,000 or more that were sold or redeemed in that seven-day span.

Winners are encouraged to sign the backs of tickets and keep winning tickets in a safe location. Tickets for draw games expire 182 days after the drawing. FAST PLAY tickets expire 182 days after purchase. The last date to claim for scratch-offs is posted on the scratch-offs page.

Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. Prizes up to $25,000 can be claimed at the cashier window of any of the six casinos in Maryland. Prizes up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. All Maryland Lottery retailers are authorized to redeem tickets worth up to and including $600. More information is available on the How to Claim page of the Lottery website.
