Retired medical worker claims first of Maryland’s four third-tier prizes won in 2025
The next time you receive a fortune cookie containing a message with a set of numbers, you might want to put those digits to work. A fortune cookie helped a Lottery player win $50,000 in the Jan. 8 Powerball drawing.
The Towson woman said she often eats at a restaurant that provides fortune cookies with meals. She opened a cookie recently and saw a set of numbers on the message. Then, she decided to use those numbers in the Powerball drawing.
“I said ‘Let me try something different'” recalled the state’s first of four winners to claim third-tier Powerball prizes won in 2025 drawings.
She purchased a ticket at Parkville’s J Convenience, located at 8765 Satyr Hill Road in Baltimore County. Her idea worked, as she matched four of the five numbers and the Powerball for the $50,000 prize.
The retired medical worker, who also reads her horoscope daily, said that if her reading mentions the word “numbers” it encourages her to purchase a Lottery ticket for that day. Now that she won big playing her fortune cookie numbers on Powerball, she plans to use them in Mega Millions and Multi-Match.
The Baltimore County resident is still undecided on how she is going to enjoy her prize but predicts the windfall will stay in the family. “It will probably go to my children and grandkids,” she said with a smile.
The loyal player noted a pattern developing with her Lottery luck. She previously won $100 when she matched three out of five numbers with the Powerball. Now she won four out of five numbers, the happy grandmother said her next step is to get all five numbers with the Powerball to secure a jackpot prize.
Tonight would be a good night to win the Powerball jackpot, which sits at an estimated annuity of $303 million with an estimated cash option of $132.8 million.
