Baltimore woman claims $1 million prize in March 18 drawing
She buys scratch-offs as gifts, a retired law enforcement employee told Lottery officials on Friday when describing the series of events that brought her to Lottery headquarters to claim her $1 million Powerball prize.
The journey to her big win began earlier this month. Our winner was heading to Timonium to do some shopping when a song on the radio reminded her of an upcoming birthday. Stopping at the first Lottery store she saw – Royal Farms #003 – the Baltimore woman noticed a Powerball jackpot sign.
“The drawing date was the same as the birthday,” she said, “So I decided to add a Powerball ticket to the scratch-off gift.”
Having completed her purchase, the lucky lady was unsure as to how to obtain her $2 change from the Lottery vending machine. “I wanted to get moving, so instead of worrying about it, I just bought one more Powerball ticket for me.”
The Lottery gift was well received, she said. “When we talked later, he thanked me for the scratch-offs and told me that his Powerball ticket had been a $7 winner.” This conversation reminded our winner of that extra Powerball ticket. She found it, compared the numbers to the March 18 results and, voila, Maryland had a new Lottery millionaire.
“It was a huge shock,” she told officials. “It took me a while to believe it was real.” Plans for her $1 million bonanza include paying bills, home remodeling, sharing her good fortune with her family and donating to charitable causes. “This is such a blessing. I intend to spread the blessings to lots of other people.”
Royal Farms #003, which sold the second-tier winning ticket, will receive a $2,500 bonus from the Lottery. The Baltimore County business can be found at 7204 York Road. This is the third $1 million winning Powerball ticket sold in Maryland in 2024.
There’s still time for players to buy tickets for the Saturday, March 30 drawing. The estimated jackpot annuity is $935 million, the fifth largest jackpot in Powerball history. The estimated cash option is $449.7 million.
